San Diego State Basketball Signs Tim Island

May 14, 2008

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's basketball head coach Steve Fisher announced Wednesday the signing of Tim Island to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Aztecs beginning with 2008-09 campaign. The 6-6, 200-pound shooting guard from Mt. San Jacinto College will be a junior next season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

"Tim is a very good perimeter player," Fisher said. "He brings an ingredient that we need; he can shoot the basketball. So we are really excited about adding Tim to the program next year."

A San Diego native, Island played his high school basketball at University City High where he averaged 22.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists and shot 58 percent from the field, including 44 percent from beyond the arc as a senior. During his final season at University City, Island helped the Centurions to a 17-7 overall record and a spot in the semifinals of the 2005 San Diego Section Division II playoffs en route to earning third-team all-CIF and all-Western League accolades. A three-year letterwinner, Island was also named to the 2004 all-Western League first team and the CIF Division II second team as a junior. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Island was a two-time member of The San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic team during his prep career.

Following his playing days at University City, Island attended Long Beach State and competed as a true freshman in 2006-07. While at LBSU, Island played in 23 games for a squad that won the Big West Conference regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament before finishing with a 24-8 record (12-2 BWC). Island averaged 2.6 points and 1.0 rebounds in 9.4 minutes and connected on 13 three-point field goals, the fifth-most on the team.

After one season at Long Beach State, Island transferred to Mt. San Jacinto College where he guided the Eagles to the 2007-08 Foothill Conference championship after going 10-4 in league play and 26-7 overall. Individually, Island was the conference's sixth-leading scorer at 16.1 points and connected on 68 three-point baskets, which was tops among the league's top-10 scorers. In 28 games, Island made multiple three-point field goals in 22 contests, including a season-best five on two different occasions, and scored in double figures 24 times (nine 20-plus point performances). Island, a first-team California Community College selection, also averaged 6.3 rebounds a game.
